The original 1986 version of The Hitcher is a very good horror suspense film that will keep you on the edge of your seat.   C. Thomas Howell does a very credible job of playing a typical college student who ends up as the prey of a very villainous Rutger Hauer playing the role of a psychopathic hitchhiker murdering his way across the country.  It's a thrill a minute film with some nice twists and turns.

The bizarre nature of the connected scenes that make up the story create a nightmarish effect throughout.   Dreamlike throughout, this film will certainly make anyone cautious about picking up a hitcher by the side of the road.

The 2007 remake is nowhere near as good but I still enjoyed it.   If you enjoyed the original you might want to check out the remake for the sake of comparison.

Have you seen either Hitcher film?  Do you enjoy films where innocent unexpecting victims are put over the edge?   Have you ever picked up a hitchhiker?

  1. I've always been kinda afraid to see The Hitcher. I saw bits and pieces and it looked a little too scary for me. I've never picked up a hitch hiker. My dad used to if he knew who they were...usually sons of people he knew or my classmates. This was in the 70s when everyone knew everyone else. One of my best friends hitch hiked from the SF Bay Area back to his mom's here in MA. Took a couple weeks. Then he hitched to Alaska from Massachusetts. This was in the early 90s.
