Understanding (Elements of Dreams) #AtoZChallenge

Dreams can help you in understanding self and the external world.   The subconscious mind reinterprets daily events as well as how you feel about your life.  If you are content and happy, your dreams will likely reflect those feelings.  If you are having dreams that frighten or discourage you then you need to take a look at your life to see what it is that might offer threats or apprehensions.

The mind uses dreams to connect your body, soul, and environment to some sense of meaning and point to ways that you can clear up the difficulties that might be standing in your way.  Your dreams rarely hand over the answers you need in any obvious way.   It's up to you to figure things out by determining what the dream symbols represent and what you need to do with them.

Your dreams might not deliver easy answers, but they can help but you on the road to better understanding.   Dreams are a useful tool when you take advantage of them.

Do you ever use dreams to understand yourself and environment better?     Do you see any useful purpose to dreams and the study of those dreams?   What are some ways that you might analyze your own dreams to make them more clear to you?

Meaning (Elements of Dreams) #AtoZChallenge

Dreams have meaning.   The meanings of dreams can be straight-forward and simple or they can be highly complicated.    Your dreams have a simple surface meaning, but they also have tiers of meanings related to the feelings, the images, and the symbolism presented in the dream.   Deciphering all of the meanings of any complex dream can take a great deal of time and analysis in most cases.   We rarely afford ourselves the effort of figuring out everything our dreams mean.

You might think of it it terms of thinking.  For example, let's say that you are looking out your window and you see a dog.   Your mind most likely fills up with thoughts related to that dog and dogs in general.  You might react to the dog's appearance and behavior, you wonder whose dog it is, you are reminded of other dogs that you've seen that look like this one, you think of your own dog or a dog you used to have, and so on.  The mind races about thinking about things you see in life and free associating thoughts with that seen image.  Every thought you have could be attached to some kind of meaning if you really thought deeply enough about it.

Our dreams are mind images, therefore what is evoked in our dreams is related to something in our lives that has a meaning.   The meaning might be obvious or it might be highly abstract.  If you are seriously attempting to figure out what a dream means then you should write down a list of all the images you can remember from the dream.  Then take each image and write down what it makes you think of and how it makes you feel.   There are layers of meaning to a highly complex dream.    You would have to consider those other meanings as well.

Figuring out what dreams mean can be fun and enlightening.  You might get the meaning right or you might be way off base.  That should never stop you from figuring out why you dreamed what you did.  Much of the time it will be matter of something you did that day or a movie you watched on TV that evening prior to sleeping.   Always consider the external factors that might have influenced your dream.

Do make any effort to interpret your own dreams?   Do you ever describe your dreams to another person to get their opinion of what a dream might mean?    Is there ever a time when you think a dream means absolutely nothing?

Useful dream data

The name NEMO has been used throughout history...
The name NEMO has been used throughout history by many famous authors to describe events and people who find themselves on the border between fantasy and reality. In Latin nemo means ‘no one’ and indicates a world between fantasy and reality. Visitors to NEMO science centre can become a scientist, technologist or technician for a day. Suddenly dreams are real.

How useful is data delivered in dreams?   Some believe that information delivered in dreams is for the most part nonsense--inanities dredged from the subconscious mind that are mostly absurd re-imagings of things garnered from our waking life.  Others believe that through interpretations dreams provide valuable information regarding our mental state or circumstances concerning our waking life that have not been recognized previously.

There are certainly other theories regarding the usefulness or not in respect to dreams.   If you remember your dreams, you probably have your own thought about how useful they are to you.  And those of you who do not remember dreams could possibly be blocking out important information your subconscious is trying to wake you up to understand.

Stories have been told of dreams solving real life problems such as the location of lost items, exposing problematic relationships, or even solving complicated scientific formulas.  If we are to believe these stories then this seems to indicate that dreams can provide reliable information that can be put to good use in waking life.   Perhaps you have had such an experience of a dream helping to solve a problem that has vexed you.

Dream research has suggested that dreams are often the subconscious sorting of data and at times might include overt interpretation of data that in waking life has not been understood.    These types of dreams can provide tangible solutions that can later be highly useful to the dreamer.  In other cases the dream may contain hidden solutions to problems, but the dream must be comprehended and decoded in order to put the data to use in waking life.

The usefulness of dream data might be up for debate, but for some their experience says an emphatic "yes" to applying dreams to solve problems or understand aspects of life.   Since the dreams come from the inner recesses of the mind, uninhibited by the norms that hinder us in waking life, my inclination would be to believe that dreams don't actually lie.  Dreams might be misinterpreted or misunderstood in such a way that we may dismiss them as folly, but the truth is there whether it be disguised or overtly stated.  It's up to the dreamer to understand what the truth is in the dream and what message the dream is conveying.

Have you had any experiences where a dream has provided information that helped you in some way?    Why do you think a dream might reveal information that one might not recognize in waking life?    Do you believe dreams can provide useful information or do you think they are primarily nonsense?

Unexpected Dream Visitors

An array of dream characters fill our dreams like actors in a weekly television show.  There are regulars who can appear in nearly every dream episode or at least with great frequency.  Then there are those special guests who appear with enough frequency that we are not surprised when they show up in our dreams.   Also there is that myriad of extras--dream actors who are like the everyday unknown people that we pass in the stores and on the streets.  Some of these may seem familiar, some are strangers, while others might be people we recognize but don't actually know in waking life.

The real surprise comes when a totally unexpected dream visitor appears on the scene.  This might be a person from our past, someone who is no longer living, or someone whom we encounter on a regular basis but wouldn't expect to see in our dreams.  These are the cameo dream roles, the walk-on performances, or simply unexpected dream visitors.

In a recent dream I had such a dream encounter...

The dream memory begins with a work-life scenario from my past as I am on my way with my touring show company to a venue where we are scheduled to work.   We are apparently looking for a high school, but we are out in a barren hilly area that is very muddy and bleak.  From the appearance of the landscape there may have been recent storms.  In the distance I see a complex of large buildings that I know to be the place of our destination, but there seems to be no way to get near to it with our truck.  I am concerned as to how we will get our equipment into the facility with such a far distance to carry it.  I walk to the school to check things out.

Once I am inside the school I am no longer with my show crew, but on my own looking for someone.  In retrospect I don't remember who that someone is.  The setting seems to be different now.   There is something like a convention going on or actually more like some sort of church conference.  Since many young people are present I understand this to be a Christian youth conference.

Being older than everyone present at this event I feel uncomfortable and out of place.  I happen to see a younger man whom I recognize as someone I used to know from our church but who left years ago under some unpleasant circumstances.  He turns away as though pretending he doesn't recognize me.  I wander around the building observing all of the activity going on.   At one point I come to a cafeteria where food is being served.  The food does not look very appetizing, but still I somewhat want some of it.  However my greatest desire is to leave this place and go back home.
Leaving the building I want to go home but I have no transportation.  I began walking on the road through the vast barren muddy landscape.  Ahead I see a familiar person. It is Bill, a man that I know from a study group that I attend during the week.   He is waiting at the bottom of the hill that I am walking down at a place where the road intersects with a larger road.  He seems happy to see me and is apparently aware that I am in need of a ride.  As I approach him a large older car, something like a 90's model Cadillac or Lincoln, pulls up and I realize that Bill has been waiting on a ride.  Bill invites me to get in the car so they can take me home.
I climb into the front seat and Bill gets in the back.  A man about our age whom I don't know is driving.  He is friendly and says he will be glad to take me home.  We enter a larger highway that reminds me of Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.   Bill hands me some booklets and I peruse them as we drive.  I feel very relieved that I have a ride home...

When I awaken I feel happy about having seen this man in my dream.  His presence gives me a sense of comfort probably because of the circumstance surrounding his appearance in my dream.  As a side note I should mention that this man is someone whom I see on a weekly basis at a Bible study.  He does not have a car and lives far from the church where we meet so that someone needs to take him home after the study or he must take a bus ride involving several transfers which means it would take him a long time to get home.  Usually there is another man at the study who drives in Bill's direction so he is able to take Bill home.

On a few occasions that other man was not at the study and I volunteered to take Bill home even though it is considerably out of my way meaning that it takes an extra 45 minutes for me to do this.  After I related my dream to my wife she suggested that maybe my dream is telling me that I should continue to take Bill home when the other ride is not available because one day I might need to count on Bill to help me in some way.

What do you think of my wife's interpretation?  Are there people for whom you have done favors who appear in your dreams to help you?    Do you sometimes have unexpected dream visitors?

What's Your Dream Age?

The Dream
The Dream (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

With my birthday coming up tomorrow (January 30th) age is something that's on my mind.   Age is something that crops up for most of us with some frequency as it is a personal bit of data that's often required when we fill out forms, medical records, surveys, and other such statistical information requests.  We may not go around touting our age in public, but age is something that we likely think about most days.

When we are children we proudly tell others our ages being sure to add the "half" or the number of months if seemingly necessary.   We long to be older and relish in the attention given when we have another birthday, especially when that attention comes in the form of a birthday party.  The festivities that include the party activities, the cake, and the birthday gifts are something we look forward to each year.

Then somewhere along the line after we've entered adulthood those birthdays become a bit less welcomed.  We know how old we are and would just as well forget it and wish everyone else would forget it as well.   After all, the graying hair, wrinkles, and aches and pains that we never experienced in our former young lives are constant reminders that old age is coming upon us and there is no stopping it.

I've heard many people say that though their bodies feel older and they can't do a lot of the things they once were able to do, they don't feel any older in their minds.   Mentally, in many ways, I don't feel much different than I did in my teenage or young adult years.   Memories and accumulated experiences are there and perhaps I have a more conservative outlook to my thinking, but my perception of the world around me, many of the insecurities, and my interests are almost the same in a great many ways.

In other words, if I'm just going along without thinking about where I am in life, in my mind I could be at just about any age of my life.   That is until I start thinking a bit more closely about who I am, what I am, and where I am in my life.  Then age starts to creep though all the cracks of my thinking.   I look in the mirror and see my father.  Surely that isn't me--that's not what I used to look like.  Not exactly like that.

And yet it is me.  Years of memories flood my brain and I realize how many more lost memories may never again be recaptured.    My brain is overflowing as it keeps filling with newness.  That guy I see in the mirror is that child who once loved birthdays but now has seen too many of them come and go.

In my dream life things are different.   There I am typically ageless.   I might still be in elementary school, high school, or the university.  In other dreams I am still working at some previous job.   Or I might be where I am today.   The dream characters around me might be from my distant past or my present and they are usually all of a same age, an ageless adult age that is neither young nor old.     I don't think of myself as being any particular age either.   I can run, leap, or even fly without effort, dauntless and carefree.

Perhaps the dream life is us stepping into another dimension where age is not an issue, but somehow interpreted as a generic adult who has passed childhood  but remains eternally youngish.  Maybe the dreams are a glimpse into heaven.    Most of the characters populating my dreams are equals in age, physique, and mentality no matter who they are and what relation they have been to me in my life.   If I see my father or my grandfather in a dream they are the same age as I am.

In certain dreams there might be a baby, a child, or someone very old, but those characters do not seem to appear very often--not to my recollection at least.    These stand-out anomalous characters apparently act as symbols or special dream messages, but they are not the norm.  They are like props in the dream drama--or maybe cameo appearances.

In my waking life I see those around me according to their ages or the ages I estimate them to be.    People are categorized according to their age.   I am in my age group.    When I interact I might often do so without taking age into too much consideration, but if I stop to think about it I am aware.  In dreams I rarely stop to think about my age or anyone's age.   Age in my dreams is typically inconsequential.

Do you notice people's ages in your dreams?    What age do you seem to be in your own dreams?    Do you think you are actually experiencing visual images in dreams?   Or do you think your mind's processing of the dream thoughts is interpreting the dream into your memory as something that you "saw" while in a subconscious state?

Flying Forward

In my previous post I said that I would announce my intentions for A Faraway View in this current post.   Here I am as promised.

I guess I'll just keep this blog going for a while longer at least.   In many cases the posts might be shorter than they used to be.  Then again they could be longer.   Like I do with all of my blogging activity I'll take things as they come and write as my whims take me.

That's a heck of a way to do things, but often life is filled with improvisation dictated by the serendipitous nature of the world.   It's kind of like the nature of dreaming I suppose.  Dreaming is often filled with twists and turns and incongruities.  That's one of the things that makes dreaming so fascinating and in many ways fun.

In future posts I will continue to speculate on the whys and wherefores of the dream life.  I may also start digging into my dream journals to describe some of the past dreams I've had.   Some of those dreams go back to my high school years.  That's over 40 years ago!   I may also relate more recent dreams.

In telling these dream stories I hope to keep them interesting as I know from experience that some dreams that I've heard others describe to me can be rather confusing and often boring.   Tell me if my posts get boring at anytime and provide constructive suggestions on how I can improve my posts.   And if the posts are just fine then leave whatever comments come to your mind.

I do hope you will comment.   As with any blog post, I see many more visits to my dream posts than comments received from those visitors.   I thank my regular commenters for their loyalty to this site.  I encourage others to give me feedback or at least just let me know you visited.

Let me know when you like something I've posted here and I'll continue to post more like it.  After all the purpose of this blog is twofold. One is to hone my own writing skills.  Blogging is writing and I hope my writing here is making me a better writer.  More importantly though my main reason for blogging on this topic  of dreaming is to exchange information and ideas.   Let's have a conversation!

Next week I'll get back to the business of dreams.  May all of our good dreams come true.

Do you think talking about dreams has a benefit?     Are you mostly interested in dreams for their entertainment value or for some other reason?    Do you tend to tell others about your dreams when they will listen?

Sorting Out Conflicts

Working Together Teamwork Puzzle Concept
Working Together Teamwork Puzzle Concept (Photo credit: lumaxart)

Recently an issue came up concerning an online collaboration that I am engaged in with others whom I  have never actually met, but correspond with on an ongoing basis.  A few members of the group were having some difficulty with another who was not doing what had been expected of him.  It was a somewhat difficult situation for me since I was in a position where I needed to resolve the issue and ask the person in question to relinquish his position in the group if he could not satisfactorily defend past actions and commit to doing better in the future.

This was even more awkward from the standpoint that I had not recognized any shortcomings of the party who was being blamed for poor performance and I considered this person a virtual friend.  I was expected to contact the individual and resolve the situation at hand.  I was not necessary exasperated, but this was a matter of some concern to me.

That night during sleep I had a dream about this.  In the dream I envisioned certain things associated with this person and was discussing the matters face to face with the person.  Again, I will remind the reader that I have never met this person in waking life.  All was well in the dream and the issues were resolved amenably.  When I woke in the morning, though I couldn't remember the exact details of the dream, I remembered having the dream and felt better about the complicated situation that had faced me the night before.

Can we resolve waking life conflicts in a dream or are these settlements illusory?    Does the working out of problems in dreams make it easier to come to waking life solutions?  Do you remember a dream that helped you come to terms with someone with whom you were having difficulties?

People You Long to See

Christmas 2010, Maryville

Do you have dreams where you see or are looking for people from your past, dead or living, that you long to see or had forgotten about?   This is a common theme in my dreams.  The following is a dream that I recorded from September 29th of 2013:

In this dream I am in my old hometown in Tennessee:   There has supposedly been a snowstorm of epic proportions, although by appearance it doesn't seem too major.  It isn't very deep, but I see snow over a vast landscape panorama all around me.  The power is out and people have been warned not to drive.
I go to a house or structure not far from my mother's house.  An old friend and  his band are supposed to be playing at a gathering to which many of our friends have been invited.
Then I find myself in a car with my mother driving.  We are at Buddy's Market, a store that has been gone for many years.  She is trying to find a parking space.  She almost drives into a vast rocky chasm in the middle of the parking lot.  It was obstructed by snow.
We go to a house where one of my sisters lives.   I am aware that many of my relatives will be there.  A niece answers door.  I see many of my family members there.  One of my sisters is mounting a 36" flat screen TV near the ceiling by easily screwing it onto a bracket.  The TV looks unusual and modernistic.  There is a picture but she can't get the sound working.
Some older people are outside and I speak with them briefly.  Returning back inside I find that everyone seems to have disappeared into back rooms.   One of my dear old friends comes into the house.  He has something in a bag which at first I think is marijuana.  He asks if anyone wants some oranges.  I look more closely and realize what he has is more of a pod like fruit surrounded by leaves.   At first I decline but then he peels one and I try it.  The fruit tastes more like mango.
Soon Vernon is gone.  I go to look for others but I'm afraid to enter any rooms.  I want to smoke some pot.   I go to wash my hands at a sink in the hallway.  A friendly stranger comes and we discuss the oranges and other things.   Somebody comes out from the back and says they've been in the pool.
I want to go back to find my friends but I don't know where they are.

Throughout this seemingly very long and involved dream I am with people who are dear to me or I am looking for such people.  The dream is very comforting and when I awaken I feel very hopeful as I long to see old friends and family.

Do you often dream about people you haven't seen in a while?   How do these kinds of dreams make you feel?    What do you think a dream of this sort means?

Dreams with Dual Interpretations

Cast a giant shadow
Cast a giant shadow (Photo credit: StefZ)
A dream can mean different things to different people.  The dreamer might tell a dream to others who will give very different interpretations as to the dream meaning.  The objectivity from one hearing a dream can often shed new light on an interpretation  that has been skewed by the dreamer's own wishful thinking or irrational fears about what a dream means.

Here is a dream that I told my wife:

In my dream I am involved with people putting together a stage performance of an opera.  While I am not directly involved with the production,  I am there because people I know are involved--possibly one of my daughters.

I am at the debut performance which is taking place in a beautiful modern theater.  A full audience is present for the premier.    When the opera begins I realize that intense sunlight from the front entrance is flooding into the rear seats of the audience and I realize that this will become very distracting and annoying to them.   There is a  lot of empty carpeted floor space at the back of the auditorium.  As I stand in the light I realize that my shadow will block the light from shining onto audience members and allow them to view the stage production without distraction.  I position myself so as to prevent the light from disturbing anyone in the audience.

One possible interpretation suggested by my wife turned out to be very different that the one that originally came to my mind.   Both interpretations seem to have equal validity.

My thought was that in the dream I am sheltering the people and providing comfort to them.   My actions contribute to the greater success of the performance.   My shadow is a protective influence that will help others.  My waking life application is that I can exert a sense of power and influence that will allow others to focus on the main event of life without being adversely affected by external influences.  From the dream I see myself as a comforter and one who wants others to be successful.

My wife suggested that the bright sunlight can represent a positive force--perhaps akin to a radiance from God.  My influence and shadow is preventing the light from touching others and keeping them in the darkness for them to be distracted instead with worldly things.  I am more concerned with the stage procession of trivial life matters and trying to shut out more important spiritual issues.   I should be welcoming the light and allowing it to illuminate everyone so they can see what is truly most important in their lives.

Either interpretation works for me.  There may be some alternative interpretations that others might come up with.  Perhaps I should look more deeply into the symbolism of the modern theater, the opera, the large empty carpeted space at the back of the theater, or the poor design of a theater with open entrance doors that allow outdoor light to filter through.

What do you think this dream means?   Do you think I am not giving certain symbolism enough relevance?    Have you ever made comparisons on interpretations by others versus your own of your dreams?
