Quest for Fire

Quest for Fire (1981) is a film about "cavemen" which gives it a dreamlike atmosphere from that perspective alone.  This is a film with no understandable dialog and primitive tribes coming into contact with each other as well as prehistoric animals.   The main story consists of members of one tribe searching for a source of fire to replace the fire that has been stolen from them.  Since they didn't have matches and didn't know how to make their own fire they have to find naturally occurring fire.  They embark upon an epic journey filled with adventure and discovery.

Filmed in exotic-looking locations in Iceland, Scotland, Kenya, and Canada; the film takes on a fantastical look that is not unlike a place in dreams.  The actions of the storyline are very rudimentary as would be expected of primitive peoples.

This film was nominated for several international awards winning several and  it also won an Oscar for best makeup.  Quest for Fire is rated highly by many critics.   This is among the better films of the prehistoric humans genre.

Have you seen Quest for Fire?   Do you enjoy "caveman" films?   Would you be likely to avoid a film with no understandable dialog?

  1. Another one I haven't seen or even heard of before. I'll have to see how a director sustained the story with cavemen seeking fire.

You're giving me a lot of movies to catch up on, Lee.

  2. C.Lee-- Since it's a journey story there are lot's of adventures along the way. I haven't seen this since it first came out. It's on my Netflix queue.

Alex has only been to this blog a few times at A to Z seasons. This is one of my neglected blogs that few people visit.

    Thank you for stopping it!

  3. One of the worst movies ever made in the history of the world. I saw it when I was a senior in high school and that's another 2 hours of my life I'll never get back.

  5. I saw it once a long time ago and I don't think I quiet understood what was going on. Then, saw it again a few years ago and it was a good movie. Especially for one with no dialogue. haha.

  7. JoJo --- There have been many other films that I'd rank as far worse than this on. It's pretty highly ranked on the film sites.

    Skyline-- Thanks

Sydney -- Or at least no understandable dialogue.

MC -- Should that have been "Don't think" or "do think"?

  8. I've seen this film and found it just as you said. I often watch foreign films and so no, movies with no understandable dialog don't bother me, especially if they're good, like this one. Yes I like caveman films, Clan of the Cave Bear and (not really a "Caveman" movie, but it's in the title) A Caveman's Valentine...
