Sickness Sleeping

No, I didn't reverse the words in my title.  I meant exactly what I wrote:  Sickness Sleeping--those long expanses of sleep time during which may dream and dream some more.  Sometimes when fever accompanies ones sleep while ill this is referred to as fever dreams.

Last week, when I was quite ill and spent much time in bed, I would sleep for hours throughout the day and during the night.  As I slept, I dreamed seemingly long dreams that would continue even after awakening and then returning to sleep.

Now I don't recall what any of those dreams were, only that I had dreamed them.  I wanted to write them down, but in the dull ache of illness I had no desire to be writing dreams.  My brief sorties to the computer were spent checking emails.   I did compose my brief blog notices why I didn't feel like posting anything, but I was in no mood to be recording dreams in any way.

I can recall having dreams during sick times when I was a child and later in life as well.  Dreams would be expected during these times since so much sleep can be involved with being sick.   Often it seems that the dreams during sickness are stranger and more vivid.  Perhaps this is partially due to the fact that being bedridden we are confronted with less realistic events during the waking hours--less for our mind to interpret or sort out.  Our waking hours may consist of more television watching, reading, or just suffering through our discomforts.  In these times of sickness the dream times are almost as equally real and important as our waking times.

Have you experienced more vivid and prolonged dream sessions when bedridden with illness?  What types of sickness dreams do you tend to experience?

Dreams of the Holiday Season

christmas dreams

When I think of Christmas-specific dreams, my thoughts go back to dreams of childhood.  I cannot recall offhand any dreams about Christmas in my adult years, but I do recall having Christmas related dreams when I was a child.

My Christmas dreams when I was a child were those of wishing for things that I wanted to find on Christmas morning or more ambiguous discoveries of unexpected things that were equally delightful.  Christmas dreams were never bad dreams.   Those dreams were sleep experiences that would leave me feeling happy, hopeful, and excited about things to come or things that could be.  Dreams related to New Year were more disconcerting.

Two Examples of Holiday Season Dreams:

One example that I remember came when I was about eleven years of age after I had begun collecting stamps.  I was passionate about the hobby at that time and I would look forward to receiving packets of foreign stamps as part of my Christmas bounty.  In one dream I was in the dining room of the house where we lived.  The house in the dream was bigger and the larger dining room was positioned differently than our actual dining room.   I reached under the table into one of the corners and discovered a cache of stamps that began pouring out into my hands and onto the floor.  I was elated by the philatelic treasure trove that I had discovered.   After awakening I checked beneath our dining room table to find out if any stamps were really there.  Of course they were not, but still the dream left me feeling happy.

Somewhere around that same time I recall having a dream related to New Years that left me with a more apprehensive feeling.  In this dream I was outside in a neighborhood not far from the one where we were living at the time in San Diego, California.   This was a neighborhood that I recognized but was mostly unfamiliar with.   I had an awareness that it was midnight.  There was a verge of New Years revelry that was overshadowed by a sense that the world was ending.  I looked up at a sky that appeared to be churning with clouds that were illuminated with an internal fire.  I was fearful, yet awestruck.

Here Is How I Interpret the Difference:

Christmas and New Year are both times of expectations.   Since the Christmas event is related to looking forward to receiving material possessions, there is usually little fear involved and a greater sense of hope.  Past experience construes previous gifts received and good times had related to that day.  Happy thoughts abound.   The Christmas dreams relate to some things unknown and things that are often probabilities, but they are all things that we believe will be happy things.  The Christmas dreams will frequently reflect that belief that we have within us.

The New Year anticipates what will hopefully be good for us, but what might also bode darkly.  This is the beginning of an entire year that could consist of bad and good.  There is not much in concrete material things that we relate to the concept of a year.   The year is primarily related to a series of events.  We may have been hearing of the previous year's events, many which may have been bad and frightening.  Predictions may be offered of things to come and sometimes those things don't sound so good.

In the early 1960's when I had the dreams related here, we were in a time of Cold War with the threat of impending nuclear war ever looming on the horizon.  I was not terrified, but interested in what was going on and fascinated by the possibilities of what could happen.   I was aware of Biblical prophesies and my favorite entertainment was any film that was  post-apocalyptic or dealing with effects of mutations resulting from nuclear energy or other sources.  My darker dreams of that period reflect not being afraid as much as being curious about where the world was going.

Have you had any dreams specifically influenced by the holidays?   If so, have you noticed any difference in dreams related to one holiday or another?   How would you suppose dreams might differ in children from one decade to the next?  Do you ever have dreams that seem to reflect apocalyptic visions?

Message Delivery System

         a dream fragment Sunday morning
                         January 22, 2012

I am supposedly in Disneyland, but a very strange underworld dream Disneyland that does not include fun fantasy rides, but weird exaggerations of things in everyday life--storefronts, businesses, and curiously dark dwellings.  There are many people on the streets and passageways of this place.  Their spirits seem individually festive, but their is a certain sad sense of chaotic silence in the place.  I accept it as it is.  After all this is a dream.

My mental state is apprehensive, bordering on frantic and desperate.  I am trying to do something that is not quite clear.  I believe I am trying to sell some goods that I have in my possession.  I am in urgent need of money.  I wander this dark Disneyland with a sense that time is running out for me.

In my mind I have an awareness that I am in this Disneyland with a group from my church.  We are being paid to do something but I'm not sure what that thing is.  As the dream progresses, my mission becomes more ambiguous, my mental state becomes more lacking in direction, and I am more confused about where I am and what I am supposed to be doing.

Then I seem to emerge in a somewhat brighter place--perhaps I've gone outdoors now.  I come to a well-known steak house chain location.  Chris, a young pastor from my church is standing at the entrance of the restaurant.  He calmly says to me, "I think we've got a big problem."   He doesn't appear to be angry.

He explains that the park management is unhappy with what I've been doing while I was supposed to be working for the park. (Now the park is no longer Dream Disneyland but Knott's Berry Farm).   Our church is going to have to return the money the park paid us to do what we were going to do. And now, due to my actions of taking care of my own business on company time we were relinquishing our pay.  The explanation is matter-of-fact, coming across to me with no tone of judgement.

I am--concerned--I'm not sure exactly what it all means.  And then after I wake up I think I know the meaning of the dream.

That's as much background as I'll give you.  You tell me if you think this dream is delivering a message.  What is your interpretation of what that message is saying?

All I can say is that I've been thinking about this dream--this message--all day.  It got me thinking about my life in general. I've been doing a lot more of that lately.   Maybe it has something to do with my impending birthday next week.  I won't say how old, but it's older than I used to be.  But still I do dream.

And I have miles to go before I sleep.  To sleep, perchance to dream.  Will my journey be long?  Or much shorter than I think?   Time will tell.  Time is bad at keeping secrets.

...but that's another post for another day.

A Mystery Explained

Art by Ada

Why have I created this blog devoted to dreams and things related?  Why not?  This is the subject matter and inspiration of my most intensely focused early writing experience.  It's a topic that is close to my heart and lives within me.   And dreams are a place where I live when I sleep.

Which life is the real one?   Which dream is most meaningful in the end?  I yearn to learn the language of the subconscious mind and relate it fluently to others.  Can that be done?

How can I keep a blog about dreams sustainable?  For one thing, I have a file of recorded dreams that is large enough to keep a one-post-a-week blog going for years.  The dreams keep coming.  This morning I dreamed, yesterday I dreamed, as well as the day before and the day before that.  I'm confident that there are many more dreams coming that will be equally remembered.  Sleeping perchance to dream is something which I do not fear and even look forward to.

           I am a dreamer.

This blog will probably have a limited audience, but it is a subject matter of wide interest.  I hope to go beyond my dreams and explore the dreams of others as well.  I will welcome guest posts from anyone who is interested in telling about their own thoughts about the topic of dreaming.  Poetry?  I'll consider that.  Stories or art?  Surrealism will be the focus here and if you have something to contribute I'll be very interested in your submissions to this blog.

On this blog I will be featuring the artwork of Ada Zdanowicz, a very talented young artist who specializes in painting and collage.   Be sure to visit her website.   She will be happy to create artwork per your specifications.  She also creates custom video.

Do you have a dream that you'd like to tell us about?   Is there a topic about dreaming that you'd like to discuss?  Has any of your creative output been influenced by your dreams?  I look forward to hearing from you.

I am a dreamer

I dream.  We all dream according to sleep researchers.  I've heard it said that if you didn't dream then you would go insane.  Your mind would create dreams that would then be forced upon you by your subconscious.  Your hallucinations would become indistinguishable from your reality.  Your reality would be dreamlike.

In a sense I suppose one could say our dreams are a form of controlled madness.  Not in a bad sense usually, but in a strange, often incoherent sense--even a lack of making any sense.  We see, we hear, we experience things good, bad, and indifferent.  Entranced for a while in sleep until our mind awakens us.  Perhaps we remember, perhaps not.

My dreams are events seen at a distance as though looking through an ethereal telescope.  I have a faraway view of things that seem to make sense as I see them and yet don't make sense when I think about them.  The dreams are mysteries to be solved.  Or are they explanations that are delivered in a language I have yet to decipher?

What do these faraway views mean--these dreams?  Why do we dream?  What purpose do our dreams serve?

I see a faraway view clearly until I try to remember what I have seen.   It slips from memory quickly if I do not preserve it to my memory.  It must be written.  Few are the dreams that stay with my mind.  And if they stay why do they stay?

I dream because I am a dreamer.   I want to remember sleep in my wakefulness.  I want to awaken my memory of a faraway view that I have seen.

How about you?  Have you deciphered the language of your dreams?  Do you run from your dreams or do you try to embrace them and let them fill you with their mysteries?
