Dark Dreams (Elements of Dreams) #AtoZChallenge
A dream phenomena that I've sometimes experienced is one that I'll call "dark dreams". This is a dream that seems to be occurring in the dark. There may be some visibility in the form of shadows, outlines, or merely the sense of what is present in the dream. In each occurrence that I've experienced there has been some sort of ominous presence or a situation about which I was unable to do anything. My reactions have included temporary paralysis, terror, confusion, and eventually a panicked return to wakefulness which might be accompanied by muted screams or talking.
This is probably a state related to what is known as night terrors or maybe it is the same thing. The dark dream state to which I refer almost always occurs shortly after falling asleep or even upon first falling asleep after going to bed. The dreams of this state are very different than normal sleep dreams as there is not any particular story line or large scale dream setting. The dream setting for me in these dreams has always been the same setting where I am sleeping such as my own bedroom or another place where I am staying.
Dark dreams are more of a mood or state of mind in which a threatening presence creates fear for ones life, health, or well-being. They are not usually pleasant dreams or dreams that I want to experience. They are the most peculiar of all dreams in that they seem to serve no useful purpose and possibly could even be harmful.
Have you experienced a dark dream such as what I've described? When have they happened? Have you experienced sleep paralysis?

Nightmare
Have you ever woken up screaming? I'm not particularly prone to nightmares--at least not the wake up screaming variety. My version of nightmares are typically more akin to watching a horror film--scary, but somewhat interesting entertainment. There are dreams that may waken me into what is a very uneasy state, but those are not the terror type dreams that leave me shaking and afraid. My version of nightmares leave me more worried or paranoid than terrified.
Are you prone to having frightening nightmares? What scares you in a dream? Have you ever been tormented by frequent recurring nightmares?

Do You Have Nightmares?

Usually the dream sequence is a small part of the film that may occur with the character either sleeping or daydreaming. In some films such as Wizard of Oz the dream is essentially the story. Conversely, in a film like Inception the story is about the dreams and concerns the process of dreaming.
Probably the most common use of dreams in films is the nightmare. A character will have a dream that will cause them to awaken in terror accompanied by sweating or screaming or both. This night terror will typically have something to do with a frightening aspect of the story and be directed to scaring the film viewer.
I can't immediately recall ever having a absolutely terrifying nightmare like those often depicted in film. The most frightening dreams I've had have generally been related to some undefined and unseen sense of terror that is not accompanied by any distinct visual that is inherently scary. In most cases these types of dreams will cause me to awaken in silence or with a start, after which I remain awake for a period of time feeling dread, anger, confusion, or sadness.
My dreams with scary visuals or themes tend to be more like nighttime entertainment as though I am watching a horror or suspense film in my sleep. If I do awaken, I will frequently return immediately to sleep in order to continue viewing the dream, sometimes with the intent of directing the dream to change the bad outcome the dream had been seeming to take. Dreams rarely terrify me, but usually they are just strange.
Do you tend to have terrible nightmares? Is there something in particular that seems to trigger these frightening dreams? How do you cope with night terrors? What types of things do you dream about that you find to be so scary?
