Activity/Action (Elements of Dreams) #AtoZChallenge

Dreams are typically busy.  We are always doing something or going some place in our dreams.  In fact there is usually action going on all around us much like in waking life.  Since dreams are essentially a sort of reflection of our waking life it only makes sense that the primary component of dreaming is action.  The activities with which we are involved in our dreams as well as those activities going on around us are frequently illogical or seem to have no motivation or goal, but they seem to make total sense to us in our dreams.

Sometimes we might find ourselves doing one thing and then suddenly doing another with no reasonable explanation as to why things changed.  In other instances we might find ourselves hindered from completing the activity we have been doing which can lead to a certain frustration.  We might start out the dream memory with specific intent and then everything seems to fall apart or get deterred.   We are late for our intended dream appointments or we can't find our way only to wander in confusion until we waken.

What types of activities do you typically find yourself doing in your dreams?   What keeps you from reaching your goals?   Would you consider most of your dreams to be active or passive?

  1. Loved this post Arlee thank you! You've captured the essence of it so well ... I walk a lot in my dreams, so they're active when that happens. I may meet someone.
Much looking forward to more ...

  2. I walk most of the time in dreams and that's good since when I'm dream driving my vehicle is often out of control or something is wrong.

  3. I am very active in my dreams. They are like movies, really vivid. The last big one I remember was that I got swept up in a tsunami!

  4. You are right, and since I don't often analyze my dreams, I hadn't thought about them always being active and action packed. This is going to be a very interesting series, Arlee. Good for me to figure out the who what and why of my dreams. The action for me is almost always at a run and the activities take place in mazes. I think I was a lab rat in a former life....LOL!!!

    1. On the surface mazes seem like they could be great fun, but I can also see how in a dream they could be frustrating and even terrifying.

  5. My dreams are generally active but I can't even remember them half the time to provide any examples.

  6. My dreams are active. Sometimes I am somebody else doing amazing things, but mostly I am me being frustrated that I can't do what I want to. Good post Arlee.

  7. I am a very busy dreamer. Sometimes even too much, because I don't feel rested in the morning :) But there is a lot of excitement in many of my dreams, so I don't mind. I dream about a lot of travel, and a lot of fighting (in the adventurous, swashbuckling kinda way, not the nightmare kind).
    Happy A to Z!

    1. I'm not quite as combative in most of my dreams, but it does seem like I'm always on the go traveling and the like.

  8. What an interesting blog, so glad I found it through this challenge! My dreams are almost always active, and often repetitive. Countless times I've dreamt of forgetting the combination on my school locker and realizing I had been skipping a particular class for weeks, missing all the assignments and tests (never happen, I was an A student).

  9. Some of my favorite dreams involve me flying. Frustratingly, they often are not about gliding effortlessly along the tops of clouds, but rather are about me desperately trying to get enough lift... running as hard as I can along the ground trying to get enough speed to launch, or flapping my wings desperately to try to stay afloat. Often my 'flying' is really more like gliding... huge leaps that allow me to pseudo-fly for a time.

I've got a post coming up about dreaming tomorrow (great minds... what can I say!) check it out if you've got the time!

    1. Offhand, I can't recall a dream I've had about flying though it's a dream that I'd like to have. I probably have dreamed about this but just don't remember right now.

  10. Great post that probably speaks to most people. I have very active dreams. Most often I'm working as a veterinary nurse, a career I had to give up due to I'll health and miss every day. At least I still get to nurse in my dreams :)

  11. As you said there is always action in my dreams but the action always feels more "attached" to emotion than in waking life. Sometimes it's an emotion that makes me remember a forgotten dream, because whatever happened in the dream was so intimately tied to an emotion, fear, sorrow, happiness, joy. Whenever I fly in my dreams, the emotion is always an extreme mix of utter joy and shadowy caution/fear. Like I know I'm loving flying, but also remember I must be careful not to fall. I LOVE to dream. Lately, I've been seeing my Dad and I'm always happy about that... Lisa, co-host AtoZ2015, @ lisabuiecollard.com

    1. Interesting about the emotional attachment. I'm not sure I've felt that, but I don't think that aspect has occurred to me. I'm usually very glad to see my father in my dreams though I have had a few bad ones with something that appeared to be my father, but somehow I suspected it was not really my Dad.

  12. Usually my dreams have me doing or attempting to do either ordinary daily tasks or something that in my dream is supposed to be an ordinary task.

  13. In so many ways, I feel lucky. I rarely remember a dream. If I wake up to a dream it is usually because something is happening in the dream that I can't handle or just unrealistic. One time I dreamt I karate kicked a threatening person. I woke up. Even my subconscious knew I could not karate kick.

  15. I wish I remembered more of my dreams. The ones I do remember are active and usually rather crazy with jumping around. But guess that is like my regular life too so makes sense. lol

  16. I try to analyze my dreams but some just don't make sense. I've written about my dreams in previous posts. Some of my recurrent dreams are my child being younger than she is, my ex trying to kill me and I can't find my car. They are very active and jump from one to another. My husband kids me and says no wonder I am tired when I wake up. A couple of times I was really angry at MyHusband in my dream and I woke up ticked off LOL. Excellent post.
