Eeriness (Elements of Dreams) #AtoZChallenge
All dreams have a certain quality of the ethereal and eerie. The very fact that we are "seeing" these night stories is just a little bit eerie, don't you think? Even pleasant or happy dreams will have a sense of an eerie presence lurking in the background as though we are being watched. When you start examining the dream layers some of the eeriness becomes more apparent.
At any time a dream can break out into an unsettling circumstance which can even become terror. Sometimes we don't know why we are afraid or the source of the terror. Then there are the times when we might not be necessarily be afraid by the dream, but what we are experiencing is just a bit disconcerting.
Sleep is a necessary time of rest for our bodies and minds, but it is also a time when we become vulnerable. Likewise our mind opens up into a mysterious dimension of the subconscious where things are strange to say the least. Or to say it another way: Eerie.
Do you feel that dreams have a sense of eeriness? Do you ever have dreams that are absolutely normal in every way? Do you enjoy the weirdness of the dream world?

Where Does Stupid Come From?
| Furious rabbit (humor) (Photo credit: Wikipedia) |
The kind of stupid that I'm talking about is the weird, sometimes silly kind of stupid that makes you roll your eyes, scratch your head in wonderment, or burst out laughing. This stupid does not come from any lack of intelligence, ignorance, or negative influence. This is the stupid of corny jokes, nonsensical commentary, or flatout tomfoolery. It's that thing you do and someone says, "Omigosh! That was so stupid!"
Fun stupid is okay as opposed to mean or cruel stupid. Today's post is about hoky fun silly stupid. The kind of wacko weirdness we often experience in our dreams. You've had those dreams haven't you? You wake up shaking your head wondering "What was that?"
It happened to me this morning. I woke up with the thought on my mind of where stupid comes from. I can't even remember what my dream was. The biggest impression that the dream made on me was that some of the things we dream about are so ridiculously outrageous that it we have to wonder where the idea ever came from.
Since our subconscious is the source of our dreams then we probably can deduce that nonsense could be a product of our subconscious. Jokes and humor are typically absurd representations of real life or exaggerations of everyday experiences. The rational mind is unlikely to resort to humor as a means of expression, but rational people need a break from reality. Humor provides one means of escapism from the daily pressures we face or the humdrum existence that we might perceive that life is doling out to us. Sometimes we need to just get away and not be serious.
Keep in mind that this is my theory. I did not research this idea to check the validity of it. I'm not even sure that any examination of the topic has ever been done. The entire idea of humor coming from the subconscious was just something that I woke up with because of some crazy dream I had. It all made sense at the time when I woke up with the idea and it actually makes more sense now as I've thought about it more.
Humor is ridiculous but it can be very useful and even necessary for good mental health. Hmmm--sounds like earlier views I've expressed about dreams.
Where do you think humor comes from? Do you think I've put forth a reasonable theory? Are your dreams so absurd and irrational (even the scary ones) that after you wake up you see the foolishness of them and maybe even laugh at what your mind saw?

Stevie Mouse
Here's a weird one. Then again, when it comes to dreams what isn't. Overall the dream is fairly uneventful as I recall. In fact, it's so uneventful that I remember very little of it, although not studying upon the dream events upon awakening is undoubtedly the biggest factor in not remembering details of this dream. The punchline of the dream is what is of greatest significance.
In the dream I seem to be at some large event that may be related to a job situation--perhaps a trade show. There are many people present and many individual events are going on. The setting is a large expanse of land much like a park with trees, grass, and various plants. I don't recall any structures in this setting. It may be a state or national park, but the landscape where this takes place is primarily an open field.
Throughout the dream I am wandering about talking to some people and observing others. The scene is a festive one with much social activity occurring. I don't not seem to have any particular mission in mind other than meandering about. This feels like it goes on for hours, but probably only minutes or seconds in dream time.
I become aware that my blogger buddy Stephen T McCarthy is present and I go to find him. Since I have never actually met him in person I am surprised to discover that Stephen T McCarthy is a mouse. He is a tiny brown field mouse so he cannot talk, but we apparently have telepathic communication. Stevie Mouse is walking and I am following alongside him.
The mouse comes to a place where there is a grassy outcropping above him. A large fearsome looking snake is heaped in the grass looking as though ready to attack my mouse friend. I am afraid of the snake, but I kick at it, not dislodging it from its place. I aim my kick better and soundly kick the snake away. I awaken with the sense that Stephen T McCarthy the mouse blogger is safe from the snake.
Why, why, why! Why in the world of dreams would Stephen T McCarthy appear to me as a mouse? In the dream I accept it as so normal as we stroll along exchanging thoughts. But a mouse? This makes no sense. Can anyone suggest any ideas about this?
