Zombies
Riding on the school bus to Merrillville Junior High School was no great pleasure for me back in the early 1960s. If it had not been for the fact that Mr. Ifyu, the bus driver, had speakers in the bus and kept the radio dialed to top forty Chicago station WLS the ride could have been miserable. As it were, I tolerated that ride and often just got lost in the music.
Image via Wikipedia It was always a pleasure when a tune by the Zombies would air. The hits "She's Not There" or "Tell Her No" were popular in 1964 as I was starting 8th grade. Songs in a minor key seem to grab me. Dream songs should be in a minor key.
Later, when I was in high school and my family had moved to East Tennessee, the great Zombies album Odyssey and Oracle was released. This is the one Zombies album that I actually owned. I spent many hours with this album playing in the background of my life. I lived and dreamed to this album.

How well I remember The Zombies singing "She's Not There,
ReplyDeleteLoved the post Lee.
Yvonne.
I do indeed remember She's Not There.
ReplyDeleteYour dream has come true Arlee...the end of the challenge.
A blast from the past! :)
ReplyDeleteMost of their hits were minor key. Remember "She's Not There" and "Time Of The Season"? Great stuff.
ReplyDeleteYvonne -- The Zombies are one of my favorites from that era of music.
ReplyDeleteDelores -- The dream never ends. One Challenge just leads to another.
Paula -- That video was a real blast from the past. Makes me feel kind of wistful.
The Sound -- I think that minor key thing was why I liked the Zombies so much. I was a big fan of their music as well as The Kinks.

>> . . . Songs in a minor key seem to grab me.
ReplyDeleteSame here, BOIDMAN.
Don't think I'd heard this song before, but it definitely had that "dreamy" quality to it.
Good way to close out 'A To Z' on this blog. I liked the song (could have done without the sight of frolicking hippies, however).

StMc -- The video of the frolicking hippies is what gave it all such a dreamlike effect when paired with the lyrics. It was like something unreal, dream people who defied logic in illogical surroundings. I watched and wondered, "Where are these people now, if they're still alive, and what have they done with their lives?"

Great ending Lee! Thanks so much for all that you do. The challenge was a blast. :)
ReplyDeleteZombies is a good z-word. I haven't heard of the band.
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you.
Best wishes,
Anna
Anna's A to Z the letter Z
Tracy -- Thanks for saying so and being a part of it.
ReplyDeleteAnna--The Zombies were part of the 1960s English Rock scene. One of the best bands of the lot. Tried to go to your site but my computer was blocking it for some reason.
Lee
Arlee, I never heard that song before. Thanks for the music education. Congrats on the A-Z challenge

Maurice -- I think this is one of the more perfect songs for my theme. The video is like a dream as well.

I'll be honest and say I've never heard of this band, but i did enjoy their song. It's good you have fond memories of them from the school bus:)
ReplyDeleteI found the zombies in high school in the 80s. I loved a Rose for Emily so much I went out and got everything. They are still wonderful to listen to today.
ReplyDeleteTF -- They are a classic group of the 60s with some truly great songs that you have undoubtedly heard.
ReplyDeleteJyllian --You are a lady of good musical taste. Good songs are timeless and "The Time of the Season" album had some of their best songs.
