One of the best of the psychedelic bands, I've heard that Quicksilver Messenger Service was at its best in live performance. Evidence of this can be heard on the Happy Trails album. Some hate the album while others think it's a masterpiece. All I know is that it got a lot of spins on my turntable when I was in college.
The track called "Calvary" is particularly haunting. That song fits well into my dream soundtrack. Likewise, the Shady Grove album was another one of my favorites. Say what you will, I like this album. It's got kind of a weird sound. More music for my dreams.
I'm not really into that sort of music Lee, but I am amazed how you have kept all your blogs up to date in the challenge, I applaud you.
ReplyDeleteYvonne.
I've actually heard of these guys, can't remember where but I have heard of them.

ReplyDeleteI used to have the 'Happy Trails' Licorice Pizza (LP). I love the cover illustration, and I love the band's name - Quicksilver Messenger Service - but to be honest, I only "semi-liked" their music.
It was an album I played occasionally but not often, and felt it just never really lived up to the band's name and the great album cover.
A couple years ago when I put together my 'MUSIC'S ALL-TIME 15 BEST ALBUM COVERS' blog bit for 'Stuffs', Quicksilver's 'Happy Trails' is one that just barely missed making the list.
In fact, looking back on it now, I think there is one change I would make: I'd probably replace the Miles Davis album cover with the cover for Brian Setzer's 'The Dirty Boogie' album.
'Happy Trails' is still a very Honorable Mention though. Great picture, great colors!

ReplyDeleteI wasn't familiar with this group Lee. Actually, I found their sound quite interesting and the accompanying video very creative.
